Bill Paxton Denied Insurance Coverage For 'Titanic' Dive - Starpulse ...

Bill Paxton

Titanic star Bill Paxton took a huge risk when he embarked on a deep sea dive to the famed wreck because he was unable to secure life insurance coverage for the trip.

Director James Cameron invited the actor along for an underwater mission to the ship's final resting place after filming for the 1999 blockbuster movie wrapped several years ago.

Paxton reveals he originally tried to get financial assurance for his wife Louise Newbury and their two children so they would be well taken care of in the event that the adventure went horribly wrong - but he was denied coverage and was forced to make a big personal decision.

During an appearance on Live With Kelly! on Friday, he said, "About five years after the movie, he (Cameron) said, 'I'm going back to Titanic and I want you to come along for the ride.' So I called up... Lloyd's of London (insurance agency) because I have young children at home and I said, 'Can you cover me on this?' and they said, 'Absolutely not.'"

The Twister star decided to make the trip anyway - and the 57 year old is glad he did.

He added, "I couldn't believe I was actually down there... When you approach it, (the ship) doesn't look very big... and (then) they shine the light down and you see where the ship actually, literally, was wrenched in half. I mean, that was a violent death... I mean the forces that led to that thing tearing apart, that really is probably the most intense and frightening thing I saw down there."

The Titanic famously sank on its maiden voyage across the Atlantic Ocean after hitting an iceberg on April 15th, 1912.
