Profiting in a Unified Communications Era - Commercial Integrator

January 29, 2013 | by Kevin Kelly

Vidyo recently announced that its video conferencing technology is going to be embedded in the new Nintendo Wii UTM Chat, a video communication service that is included with every Wii U console. The integration of Vidyo?s software into the Nintendo VC service underscores the significant growth and expansion of the video conferencing industry, and points the way to the future.

With low-cost video conferencing options such as Skype and Facetime, it?s clear that the industry no longer solely serves corporations. In fact, the top markets for A/V integrators to build their organizations? profitability include small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs), higher education and healthcare, with these verticals expanding the market that provides a higher margin on the sale than any other product categories.

The new era of video conferencing provides dealers the opportunity to sell software that works for their customers, both in quality and price, and marks the new era of unified communications.

When it comes to making business development calls, there is no better category in the A/V business to start the discussion than video conferencing. It offers margin, sale size and ongoing revenue. Today, dealers have more exciting ways to profit from the expanding reach of video conferencing, and the availability of affordable solutions can mean both short and long-term gains for dealers.

A video conferencing sale can mean much more for dealers than the profit from the immediate sale. The sale creates associated sales of displays, audio equipment, and other components that users of video conferencing software surely need to have. Also, the ongoing service contracts create annuities for dealers that are unheard of in any other sector of the pro A/V industry.

Most importantly, the increased number of endpoints is changing the way that people view the need to video conference, and more people are taking notice of the seemingly endless opportunities that video conferencing offers.

What began as high-end video conferencing through dedicated telepresence systems from companies like Cisco has evolved through lower-cost dedicated video conferencing systems that can be leased for under $100 a month, to software- based PC video conferencing solutions, to device-based (phones, tablets) conferencing. The fact that all of these different video conferencing systems can be combined at any given time is what makes this era of video conferencing the new era of unified communications.

Unified communications is on the verge of becoming a major new growth opportunity for dealers in virtually every vertical market, offering end users a wide selection of product offerings that cover every need from dedicated enterprise- wide video conferencing systems to software-based, PC-attached solutions.

The responsibility lies with each and every video conferencing dealer to learn more about how unified communications can benefit them and their customer base. The question is: Are your customers asking you for the product? When do we reach the tipping point? It may be closer than you think ? What?s your IP address?

Misconceptions about a popular pet treat: Tasty bully sticks can add ...

A popular dog treat, the "bully stick," could be adding more calories than pet owners realize and possibly be contaminated by bacteria, according to a study published this month by researchers at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University and the University of Guelph. A popular dog treat could be adding more calories than pet owners realize, and possibly be contaminated by bacteria, according to a study published this month by researchers at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University and the University of Guelph.

The treat in question: the "bully" or "pizzle stick." The American and Canadian researchers analyzed the caloric density and bacterial contamination of these popular items, made from the uncooked, dried penis of a bull or steer. They also administered a survey to pet owners to assess their knowledge of these treats.

The study, published in the January 2013 issue of the Canadian Veterinary Journal, examined 26 bully sticks purchased from retailers in the United States and Canada and made by different manufacturers.

A random subset of the 26 bully sticks was tested for caloric content. These bully sticks tested contained between nine to 22 calories per inch, meaning the average six inch stick packed 88 calories?nine percent of the daily calorie requirements for a 50-pound dog, and 30 percent of the daily calorie requirements for a 10-pound dog.

"While calorie information isn't currently required on pet treats or most pet foods, these findings reinforce that veterinarians and pet owners need to be aware of pet treats like these bully sticks as a source of calories in a dog's diet," said Lisa M. Freeman, DVM, PhD, DACVN, professor of nutrition at TCSVM who is board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Nutrition.

Freeman was first author on the paper. Co-authors were J. Scott Weese, professor in the Department of Pathobiology at the University of Guelph, and Nicol Janecko, a research associate at the Canadian university.

"With obesity in pets on the rise, it is important for pet owners to factor in not only their dog's food, but also treats and table food," Freeman added.

All 26 treats were tested for bacterial contaminants. One (4 percent) of the sticks was contaminated with Clostridium difficile; one (four percent) was contaminated with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), a type of staph bacteria that is resistant to certain antibiotics; and seven (27 percent) were contaminated with Escherichia coli, including one tetracycline-resistant sample.

The number of treats sampled was small and not all of these bacterial strains have been shown to infect humans. However, the researchers advise all pet owners to wash their hands after touching such treats, as they would with any raw meat or raw meat diets. The very young, elderly, pregnant, immunocompromised and other high-risk individuals should avoid all contact with raw animal-product based treats and raw meat diets, note the scientists.

To learn more about veterinarian and pet owner perceptions of dog foods and treats, the research team developed a 20-question Web-based survey. The survey was posted online for public participation for 60 days and all responses were anonymous. It was completed by 852 adults from 44 states and six countries. Most respondents were female dog owners.

"We were surprised at the clear misconceptions pet owners and veterinarians have with pet foods and many of the popular raw animal-product based pet treats currently on the market," said Freeman. "For example, 71 percent of people feeding bully sticks to their pets stated they avoid by-products in pet foods, yet bully sticks are, for all intents and purposes, an animal by-product."

Another surprising finding was the large number of people who did not know what bully sticks actually were. A higher proportion of veterinarians (62 percent) were able to correctly identify the source of bully sticks as bull penis compared to general respondents (44 percent). Twenty-three percent of the respondents fed their dogs bully sticks.

Further research with a larger sample size is needed to determine whether the calorie content and contamination rate found in this study is representative of all bully sticks, or other types of pet treats, according to the authors.

PFT: Redskins tried to meet fake online woman

bill-callahan-raiders-super-bowlAP

As the allegations of sabotage in Super Bowl XXXVII grew, it was only a matter of time before former Raiders coach Bill Callahan addressed them.? And address them he did, via a late-night statement suggesting that he has gotten himself lawyered up.

By uttering the ?D? word (not the one that ends in ?bag?), Callahan and/or whoever wrote the statement is making it clear to Tim Brown, Jerry Rice, and the persons who represent their legal interests that litigation is at least being contemplated.

But while a defamation lawsuit against one or both former players would become great theater, it would entail many challenges ? and cause significant collateral damage for Callahan, and possibly others.

1.? The statute of limitations against Brown possibly has expired.?

When pressed last night by Erik Kuselias of Pro Football Talk on the assertion of sabotage a decade after the game, Brown said that he has been talking about his suspicions on national television and Dallas radio for years.? Which means that, if Brown is sued, his first defense will be that Callahan waited too long to sue.

In most jurisdictions, the statute of limitations is one year.? It has been more than one year since Brown made his statements in a public setting.

I haven?t research the issue completely (which as I learned early in my legal career is standard lawyer code for ?I don?t really know what I?m talking about?), so it?s entirely possible that, in whichever jurisdiction Callahan would sue, each utterance of the false statement sets the clock back to zero.

2.? The difference between fact and opinion.

If a lawsuit is filed (and if it?s determined to be within the statute of limitations), the biggest challenge will be drawing a line between fact and opinion.? False statements of fact can lead to litigation; uninformed or incorrect opinions based on actual facts are protected.

The factual assertion from Brown is that Callahan drastically changed the offensive game plan two days before Super Bowl XXXVII.? Brown?s opinion is that Callahan was trying to sabotage the Raiders.

It?s a fine line, but Brown arguably has stayed on the right side of it.? Even last night, when he was as candid as he?s ever been about his beliefs, Brown said, ?I?m not necessarily saying he [changed the game plan] for that reason, but it happened.?

Rice may not have been as careful.? ?For some reason ? and I don?t know why ? Bill Callahan did not like me,? Rice said Tuesday on ESPN. ?In a way, maybe because he didn?t like the Raiders, he decided, ?Maybe we should sabotage this a little bit and let Jon Gruden go out and win this one.??

3.? Callahan is a public figure.

For ordinary citizens, any untrue statement of fact can provide the basis for a defamation lawsuit.? For public figures, a higher standard applies.

Callahan will have to show that Brown and Rice knew the allegations were false, or that they acted with reckless disregard to the truth or falsity of their comments.? That necessarily makes any case of defamation against a public figure like Callahan harder to prove.

In this case, it means that Brown and Rice would give detailed testimony on what they experienced that caused them to believe what they believed.? They?ll surely say that something different happened before that game than anything they?d experienced in all their years of playing football, which caused them to believe that Callahan was up to something.

Against a private citizen, that may not matter.? Against a public figure, that explanation could result in the case being tossed before it ever would be presented to a jury.

4.? Callahan would expose himself to significant criticism.

If the case goes forward, many former Raiders players and coaches will be questioned under oath.? And while they will have different perceptions and beliefs about the reasons for the decisions made and not made by Callahan, the questioning will rehash everything that happened in preparation for the game, including whether the game plan was changed and why the audibles and other terminology installed by Buccaneers coach Jon Gruden during his time as the Raiders coach wasn?t.

In other words, and as Kuselias framed the issue last night, Callahan was either corrupt or incompetent.? By proving he wasn?t corrupt, Callahan could end up shining a bright light on the notion that he is incompetent.

5.? Plenty of big names will be involved.

If it goes to trial, this lawsuit ultimately could top, from a media standpoint, every lawsuit ever filed or threatened by the late Al Davis.? The parade in and out of the courtroom would be even more impressive than the? Seinfeld finale, with guys like Rich Gannon and Tyrone Wheatley and Lincoln Kennedy and Bill Romanowski and Rod Woodson and Charles Woodson and Charlie Garner and maybe even Shane Lechler and Sebastian Janikowski making the walk to the witness stand, along with members of the 2002 Raiders coaching staff, including current NFL head coaches Marc Trestman and Jim Harbaugh.

Jon Gruden would likely make an appearance at some point, possibly along with members of the Buccaneers defense (which had guys like Warren Sapp, Derrick Brooks, and John Lynch), who would be able to shed light on whether or not Gruden seemed to know what was going to happen, and possibly why he knew that.

Current and former NFL head coaches like Rod Marinelli, Raheem Morris, and Mike Tomlin ? all members of the 2002 Buccaneers coaching staff ? also could be involved, along with former Bucs (and current Cowboys) defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin.

At one point during the game, Lynch told Tomlin, ?Mike, every play they?ve run, we ran in practice.? It?s unreal.?

Said Tomlin in response, ?I know.?

The biggest name of all could be the guy who won?t be able to directly participate.? If the game plan was indeed changed by Callahan, we continue to believe the most plausible explanation is that Callahan was ordered to do so by owner Al Davis.? It would be fitting if the outcome of the lawsuit turns on whether a jury believes that Callahan was simply following the marching orders given to him by one of the most litigious owners in sports history.

6.? What should happen next.

Though it would be fascinating to cover the litigation and any trial that would happen, the smart move in the short term would be for Brown and Rice to issue statements explaining clearly that they are merely stating their opinions, based on the facts that they experienced.

And then they should never discuss the situation publicly again.

While on one hand the issuance of statements would suggest that they fear litigation, on the other hand it would be a prudent way of both putting a bow on a story that has quickly taken on a life of its own and managing potential liability risks.

Either way, the ball is not back in Brown?s and Rice?s court.

CHOP researcher leads large multicenter gene sequencing study of neuroblastoma

An extensive genomic study of the childhood cancer neuroblastoma reinforces the challenges in treating the most aggressive forms of this disease. Contrary to expectations, the scientists found relatively few recurrent gene mutationsmutations that would suggest new targets for neuroblastoma treatment. Instead, say the researchers, they have now refocused on how neuroblastoma tumors evolve in response to medicine and other factors.

"This research underscores the fact that tumor cells often change rapidly over time, so more effective treatments for this aggressive cancer will need to account for the dynamic nature of neuroblastoma," said study leader John M. Maris, M.D., director of the Center for Childhood Cancer Research at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP).

Striking the peripheral nervous system, neuroblastoma usually appears as a solid tumor in a young child's chest or abdomen. It comprises 7 percent of all childhood cancers, but causes 10 to 15 percent of all childhood cancer-related deaths. Neuroblastoma is notoriously complex, with a broad number of gene changes that can give rise to the disease.

Maris headed the multicenter research collaborative, the TARGET (Therapeutically Applicable Research to Generate Effective Treatments) initiative, which released its findings today in Nature Genetics. This largest-ever study genomic study of a childhood cancer analyzed DNA from 240 children with high-risk neuroblastomas. Using a combination of whole-exome, whole-genome and transcriptome sequencing, the study compared DNA from tumors with DNA in normal cells from the same patients.

Researchers at CHOP and other centers previously discovered neuroblastoma-causing mutations, such as those in the ALK gene. In the subset of patients carrying this mutation, oncologists can provide effective treatments tailored to their genetic profile.

"A few years ago, we thought we would be able to sequence the genomes of individual patients with neuroblastoma, detect their specific cancer-causing mutations, and then select from a menu of treatments," said Maris. The oncology researchers designed the TARGET study to perform genomic analyses of a large cohort of high-risk neuroblastoma patients, with the goal of mapping out a limited number of treatment strategies. This approach would represent a significant step forward in personalizing neuroblastoma therapy.

However, while the researchers confirmed that roughly 10 percent of the study's neuroblastoma patients had ALK mutations, and found that a handful of other gene mutations each accounted for percentages in the single digits, there were relatively few recurrent mutations in somatic (non-germline) cells. "The relative paucity of recurrent mutations challenges the concept that druggable targets can be defined in each patient by DNA sequencing alone," wrote the authors.

In the absence of frequently altered oncogenes that drive high-risk neuroblastomas, the authors concluded that most such cases may result from other changes: rare germline mutations, copy number variations and epigenetic modifications during tumor evolution.

"Personalized medicine is more complex than we had hoped," said Maris. "While there are successes such as those in treating patients whose tumors harbor ALK mutations, this study implies that we must think very differently about how we'll use genomics to define treatment." Maris added that neuroblastoma researchers may need to turn to functional genomics, learning which tumors will or won't respond to treatments, as well as going beyond a static picture of a cancer cell with fixed genetic contents, to devising interventions to deal with dynamic tumor cells that evolve during nervous system development.

49ers rally past Falcons 28-24 in NFC title game

ATLANTA (AP) ? The loss stuck with them for a year, pushing the San Francisco 49ers in everything they did.

They didn't want to feel that way again.

Not to worry.

The 49ers are headed to the Super Bowl.

Bouncing back from a bitter loss in the 2012 NFC championship game, San Francisco cleared the hurdle it couldn't quite get over the previous season. And, boy, did the 49ers earn it, rallying from an early 17-0 deficit to beat the Atlanta Falcons 28-24 on Sunday.

"We worked so hard," said Frank Gore, who ran for a pair of touchdowns, including the go-ahead score with 8:23 remaining. "We knew that we got here last year and it didn't happen. But we got back and we said to ourselves, as a team, that this time we've got to walk through the door. You really don't get opportunities like this."

The 49ers used to get them all the time, winning five Super Bowl titles in the 1980s and '90s. Now, with a clutch quarterback (Colin Kaepernick), a budding genius of a coach (Jim Harbaugh) and a big-play defense, they're ready to start a new dynasty.

They were one win away from playing for it all last season, until a fumbled return in the NFC championship game led to the winning field goal in overtime for the eventual Super Bowl champion New York Giants.

When the Falcons raced to their big lead by the first play of the second quarter, San Francisco (13-4-1) appeared headed for more disappointment.

But no one lost faith, and the 49ers pulled off the biggest comeback victory ever in an NFC championship game, according to STATS.

The previous record was 13 points ? Atlanta's victory over Minnesota in the 1999 title game, which sent the Falcons to what remains the only Super Bowl appearance in franchise history. The AFC championship game record is 18 points, when Indianapolis rallied past New England in 2007.

"I don't really think it's destiny or anything like that written on the walls," 49ers defensive tackle Justin Smith said. "It's the team that works the hardest, prepares the hardest, and has the best players and coaching staff. You pour all that in together and it comes out pretty good at the end."

The 49ers advanced to face Baltimore at New Orleans in two weeks, looking to join Pittsburgh as the only franchises with six Super Bowl titles. It'll be a brother-vs.-brother matchup, too; John Harbaugh coaches the Ravens.

But Jim Harbaugh wasn't concerned about a family reunion.

He was hoppin' mad when a disputed call went against the 49ers on Atlanta's potential winning drive in the closing minutes. Harbaugh leaped in the air, screamed at the officials and had to be restrained by his staff from charging the field.

But the 49ers stopped Atlanta on a fourth-down play at their own 10, as linebacker NaVorro Bowman reached in to swat the ball away from Roddy White on a pass across the middle with 1:09 remaining.

San Francisco ran off all but the final 6 seconds, not nearly enough time for Matt Ryan to pull out another improbable comeback.

The previous week, Atlanta (14-4) squandered a 20-point lead in the fourth quarter against the Seattle Seahawks, nearly becoming the first team to lose with such a daunting advantage in the final period of a playoff game. But Ryan completed two long passes in the final 30 seconds, and Matt Bryant kicked a 49-yard field goal for a 30-28 victory.

After Gore's second TD gave San Francisco its first lead of the day, the Falcons took the ensuing kickoff and used up nearly all the clock while going 70 yards. They might have reclaimed the lead if Harry Douglas had been able to stay on his feet while hauling in a 22-yard pass.

The defender slipped, leaving Douglas all alone down the sideline. But he tripped, too, doing well to make the catch without the ball hitting the turf. Harbaugh thought it did, challenging the call, but the referee ruled it a catch after looking at the replay.

That's when Harbaugh nearly lost it.

It all worked out, though.

"We rose up there at the end," Harbaugh said. "It was a great finish for our defense, an exclamation point on the game."

The Falcons ran up and down the field in the first two quarters, piling up 17 first downs and 297 yards for a 24-14 lead. Ryan played a nearly perfect half, completing 18 of 24 passes for 271 yards and three touchdowns, two of them to Julio Jones. When Tony Gonzalez hauled in a 10-yard touchdown pass with 25 seconds remaining, restoring a double-digit lead, it looked as though Atlanta had weathered the 49ers' comeback.

Actually, the Falcons were done, at least on the scoreboard.

They were held scoreless over the final two periods by the 49ers, who seized on two key mistakes by Ryan. First, after guiding the Falcons into San Francisco territory, he was picked off by Chris Culliver. Then, with Atlanta well within field-goal range at the 49ers 28, Ryan took his eye off a shotgun snap for a split-second and the ball bounced off his hands. Aldon Smith recovered for San Francisco.

"Against a good football team like that, you can't have those kinds of mistakes," Ryan said. "We moved the ball really effectively all day. We just had two chances where we were in positive territory and didn't walk away with points."

The 49ers are headed to the Super Bowl for the first time since 1995, when they won the last of their championships.

"We've come full circle," said Denise DeBartolo York, part of the family that has owned the 49ers since their championship days, "and the dynasty will prevail."

The city by the bay is rapidly becoming the new Titletown USA. The 49ers will try follow the lead of the baseball Giants, who gave San Francisco a World Series championship in October.

Kaepernick didn't get a chance to show off his touchdown celebration for the 49ers ? flexing his right arm and kissing his bicep, a move that quickly became a social media sensation known as Kaepernicking.

But the second-year quarterback who runs like a track star shredded the Falcons through the air by completing 16 of 21 for 233 yards, including a 4-yard touchdown to Vernon Davis. Plus, he caused so much concern about his running ability out of the spread option that Gore and LaMichael James found plenty of huge holes.

Ryan had the best playoff game of his career, completing 30 of 42 for 396 yards. His favorite target was Jones, who hauled in scoring passes of 46 and 20 yards on the way to finishing with 11 catches for 182 yards.

But it wasn't enough to extend the career of Gonzalez, the Hall of Famer-to-be who has said all along this would likely be his final season.

He sure sounded like it was over.

"I've had such a great life," he said. "I wish it would've culminated with the Super Bowl, but it didn't."

Gore scored on runs of 5 and 9 yards, finishing with 90 yards on 21 carries. James picked up the first TD for the 49ers on a 15-yard run. Davis had five catches for 106 yards, and the 49ers overcame a fumble by Michael Crabtree just short of the goal line early in the fourth quarter, giving the Falcons a glimmer of hope.

"I take my hat off to Atlanta. They played hard. They've got a great team," Gore said. "But we fought, man. We fought and we deserved it."

And no one was thinking about last season anymore.

Notes: The Falcons rushed for only 81 yards and lost Michael Turner in the second half to an ankle injury. He gained 30 yards on eight carries. ... San Francisco K David Akers had another miss in a dismal season, clanking a 38-yard attempt off the left upright in the third quarter. ... Jones set a franchise record for receiving yards in a playoff game, topping Alfred Jenkins' mark of 155 in a 1981 loss to Dallas.

George Orwell's 1984 Technology: How Close Are We to Big Brother?

Is George Orwell's 1984 view of the world really possible? Image by colindunn

Is George Orwell?s 1984 view of the world really possible? Image by colindunn

George Orwell?s novel,?Nineteen Eighty-Four was the idea behind the reality TV show Big Brother. The idea that the Government knows every move that you make is a scary prospect for many, even law-abiding citizens. So, is the technology used in the sinister classic novel a possibility in this day and age?

Nineteen Eighty-Four More Than Just CCTV

At first, when you consider the world of Nineteen Eighty-Four,?you might think of CCTV and surveillance cameras, but the technology used in the novel is more than just that. While using cameras to monitor crime could be viewed as Big Brother in action, both the U.S. and the U.K use it with the intent to help protect the community. The technology used in George Orwell?s tale actually includes two-way television screens that allow for communication. The screens never explicitly had cameras installed in them as the modern-day technology does; the communication was through the screen itself!

This type of technology has not been developed yet, but it is worth commenting that when the novel was written in 1949, technology had not advanced to what we know today. There were no personal computers, or Internet, and the most significant type of electronic technology most houses had was a radio. ?The screens described in George Orwell?s book must have been developed over time and would have gone through a process of upgrades, so it is likely that it all could have started from the video communication that we have right now.

Winston Smith?s Speakwrite

Winston Smith is the protagonist of the story and works as a copywriter for the London Times. His job is to make changes to history to suit the government?s needs, and he uses a ?Speakwrite? to help him with that. The device hears everything he says and then writes it down, word for word.

Today?s speech-to-text technology is getting closer to this, using a type of artificial intelligence called natural language processing. The downside of the software is that it needs to be trained to understand your voice, accent and dialect, and you still need to proofread everything it creates ? although the software does become more proficient at transcribing your words over time. As with the telescreens described above, the technology Orwell imagined must have grown from somewhere, and today?s voice-to-text software is one step in the right direction.

A Stick To Beat Gamers With

The games industry has an image problem. Some people may protest, but you know it, I know it and, boy, does the media know it. Computer games and, by extension, gamers are often derided in the general consciousness, seen as a group of social outcasts, misfits who just?aren?t?like ?normal? people. It may be grossly unfair, but the stereotype of a gamer who lives on his own (and he?s always male) or with his parents,?doesn?t?wash and doesn?t really interact with other people prevails in many people?s minds. In the mental image, he?ll most likely be teenage or early twenties too, sitting for hour upon hour at his computer, playing his games.

In many ways, the gamer today is seen as the ?other?, the radical and worrying person who is not like ?us?, the normal everyday population. To see this, all we have to do is look at the reactions to recent events. Take, for example, the reaction to the Sandy Hook shootings. The links between the shooter and gaming were highlighted over and over. It was reported by many reputable news outlets that the shooter, Adam Lanza, was ?addicted to video games? and that this was ?the cause? of his actions.

Now, while this can be attributed to a sensationalist press doing its best to sensationalise the events, with journalists playing amateur-detective/psychologist to get the latest ?scoop?, the fact remains that this is only possible because it taps into an existing impression of gamers held (partly) by many of the non-gaming populace.

As you?re currently reading this article which is posted on a gaming website, the odds are good that you would consider yourself to be a gamer. That means that you, as a member of this sub-culture, are tarred with that same brush. Think about that for a minute? its not a nice feeling is it?

The Stereotype, in all its... glory

The Stereotype, in all its? glory

So, how can we change this situation?

To a certain extent, the process will be a natural ?progression of social perceptions. In many ways, gaming is merely the latest in a long line of society?s scapegoats. Think back to the previous decades and the go-to group for the media theories on things like the Sandy Hook tragedy was the Rock/Punk music scene. Take the Columbine Massacre as an example; the shooters were widely reported to be heavily influenced by Rock bands such as Rammestein and Maralyn Manson. That was the prevalent ?fringe? group in the popular media?s eyes at the time. To put it another way, I bet if you looked at Adam Lanza?s music collection, he had some rock music in there. But, Rock music is more accepted by the mainstream today, so gaming gets the negative links. Vice versa, I suspect that the perpetrators of Columbine played video games, but because gaming was less infamous than rock music at the time, it is not linked in the same way. In this sense, as the current generation of gamers gets older and becomes the middle aged masses of tomorrow, gaming will, like rock music, become more socially normal and accepted and another sub-culture will become society?s new whipping boy.

The problem is, though, the gaming industry really doesn?t do itself any favours sometimes. Yes, there are debates to be had over the depiction of violence in games and the effect of ever more immersive games and their relative effect on vulnerable/impressionable minds, but that?s not what I?m referring to. What I?m referring to are the instances where the industry plays up to every stereotype of worthless, immature voyeurism and exploitation levelled at it. For every game that can be held up as a shining example of games as an art-form, such as Mass Effect, there is a worthless title with no actual gameplay quality that relies purely on titillation or controversy value to sell copies.

Which brings me to the game that made me the most angry of any game I?ve ever played; Onechanbara: Bikini Samurai Squad. This game, which I picked up purely because I expected it to be a shoddy title I could review as an example of poor gameplay, turned out to be an embodiment of many of the things that are wrong with the industry. The game is sold ENTIRELY on the fact that it has semi-naked women killing zombies in gory detail. That?s it. There has been NO effort put in to make this anything but an incredibly basic game. Taken on its own, the ?gameplay? has less actual challenge or intricacy than games designed for controllers with one button. Gameplay has no place in this game. The cynical marketing is demonstrated on the case, with the front featuring one member of the eponymous Bikini Samurai Squad and the title. The reverse of the case consists of the same character with another member (dressed in a revealing schoolgirl outfit no less) and emphasises the phrase ?Sexy samurai sisters? and the ?feature? to unlock new costumes for them.

Even worse than it looks

Even worse than it looks

This is the sort of game, along with other games like BMX XXX and Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball, are an example of the industry playing up to negative stereotypes and dragging the whole industry down. These games serve no purpose other than to gather sales based entirely on titillation and gore and reinforce the perception of gamers as horny, mal-adjusted teenage boys.

Oh, and for those who will suggest these are games by small developers with niche appeal, consider this: firstly, DOA Xtreme Beach Volleyball was by a major developer and received a large amount of coverage. For goodness sake, it was hailed for its innovation in ?advanced breast-jiggle physics! And, secondly, even if these games ARE niche, the fact is they sell.

And that?s the problem, these games sell. And I was part of the problem. Yes, I bought the game second hand and for the express reason that it would be terrible, but I bought it. While there is demand for these games, they will exist. It?s depressing but it?s true. I bought Onechanbara on Ebay and I was outbid no less than 4 times for the game before I bought it, by four different people, showing there is a not insignificant demand.

This is just depressing

This is just depressing

Yes, the stereotypes laid on the games industry and gamers as a whole are, in the main, grossly unfair, but stereotypes are, in the main, an exaggeration of a genuine aspect of the subject. In this case, part of the fault for the negative impression can be laid at gaming and gamers as a whole. While, the reputation of gaming is the culmination of numerous factors, gamers need to look closer to home before decrying the media for its depictions of the genre.

While lazy and exploitative developers can make a profit shilling sub-par and insubstantial titles purely on sexual or violent themes, this will always be a stick with which people can beat gamers.

PST: 'Americanize' stadiums of Europe?

In terms of transfer news happening overnight ? It?s not really ?overnight? in Europe, see? So things, you know, ?happen? ? there were no big haymakers, only a few little jabs here and there.

In terms of potential U.S. players moving overseas, there wasn?t even that.

But one prominent newspaper took the opportunity to evaluate how a significant element of American sports definitely is being transferred overseas, if only bit by bit.

It?s the American ability to monetize a facility.

Personally, I do enjoy the older world European model, where a stadium is actually a place to play an athletic event, and for fans to actually get lost in an athletic event (rather than getting lost in a gooey bowl of nachos). You might get a beer or a hot chocolate before kickoff, and if you?re fast, you can sneak in a bonus refreshment at halftime. If you?re fast ? because those lines inside the cramped concourses get long in a super-big hurry.

I don?t need to stock up on chicken tenders and all beef doggers or purchase bags full of memories. And I certainly don?t need to be up-sold the ?premium experience,? whatever that is. (Jeezey-Pete, it?s a soccer game, not a Caribbean Cruise!)

But some people clearly like it and are willing to pay for it. Hence, the massive American football grounds with massive opportunity to throw down as much green as you darn well please. We enjoy our excess in American, and this is the reality of modern sports.

Now, the author of this piece in the Guardian, who works for a design firm that specializes in facility research, says Europeans are slowly getting better at emulating their American counterparts.

He uses Arsenal?s relatively new Emirates Stadium as an example, and says the new ground recently announced for AS Roma (you go, Michael Bradley!) will feature much of the same lucrative fancy-schmancy.

It?s not just the premium pricing where Americans excel, it?s also the overall commercialization aspect. Over here, of course, we probably are thinking, ?Be careful what you ask for.?

Where I live, the big colossus of a football stadium includes a store just to sell freakin? women?s panties. Panties! At a football stadium.

Any-who ? here?s what Joshua Boren has to say about it in this morning?s Guardian (linked above).

Given the overall success of the business model it was only a matter of time before it was imported and replicated by overseas clubs seeking new ? and renovated ? stadiums. The most notable and easily recognizable example is that of Emirates Stadium, home of Arsenal and opened in 2006.

Emirates, boasting American influence and design elements, became the model for UEFA and other European clubs seeking ways to maximize revenue and better the overall fan experience. Emirates has been hailed for its success and has highlighted another area where clubs could compete beyond the pitch in the ever-growing arms war that is football; stadium development and commercial rights.

Berlusconi seen falling short in Italy election

ROME (Reuters) - Silvio Berlusconi has little chance of destabilizing a center-left government after Italy's February election and outgoing premier Mario Monti is the most likely to become kingmaker, one of Italy's top experts on voting trends said on Wednesday.

Political scientist Roberto D'Alimonte, a professor at the Luiss private university in Rome, said the most likely result of the election was a center-left government strong enough to rule alone or in coalition with Monti's centrists.

This prediction may reassure investors worried by the risk that Berlusconi could play a spoiler role after the election, returning Italy to the kind of instability that forced his replacement by Monti in November 201l as Italy careened towards a Greek-type meltdown.

The center-left of Pier Luigi Bersani, which is well ahead in opinion polls, is thought certain to win the lower house. But the real battle will be in the Senate where seats are decided on a regional basis.

Berlusconi's strategy, fortified by an electoral pact this week with the federalist Northern League, is to win enough Senate seats to prevent Bersani passing legislation.

D'Alimonte said that as things stand this is practically impossible.

Using an Ipsos opinion poll published on Tuesday of four battleground regions in the Senate race, and updated projections from a previous survey, D'Alimonte published 10 different scenarios in the financial daily Sole 24 Ore.

In only one of these scenarios could Berlusconi play a blocking role and D'Alimonte said this was highly unlikely.

"This means it is not credible that Berlusconi could play a decisive role in the Senate. It is Monti who could eventually hold this position," D'Alimonte said.

Bersani says his coalition, which is polling at just short of 40 percent, or more than 10 points ahead of Berlusconi's center-right, will win both houses in the Feb 24-25 vote.

Berlusconi, a skilled political operator and media magnate, insists he can still win the election by clawing back a large pool of disillusioned and undecided voters, but this seems unlikely based on all opinion polls.

BERLUSCONI MEDIA OFFENSIVE

He has bombarded the air waves since he returned to the front line in December and boosted the center-right's fortunes, but his coalition is still polling less than 30 percent.

There is one potential obstacle to the idea that Monti would join a coalition with Bersani. The former European Commissioner has strongly indicated that his price would be the premiership, something Bersani rejects out of hand.

However, it seems unlikely that Monti would open the door to Berlusconi by refusing to form a stable government with Bersani.

D'Alimonte's projections are based on Bersani winning 13 of Italy's 17 regions and the race being decided in four swing areas, Lombardy, Veneto, Campania and Sicily.

In what may be even more reassuring to markets, in six of D'Alimonte's projections Bersani could rule in coalition with Monti even if his leftwing allies SEL broke away because of disagreements over economic policy.

In two of the projections the center-left could rule without Monti. "It is not in fact to be excluded that the PD-SEL coalition could win all 17 regions and then the support of Monti's list would not be strictly indispensable," D'Alimonte said.

Berlusconi's only chance is if he can prevent Monti's coalition from crossing the eight percent threshold needed to enter the Senate, which seems out of reach since his group is polling about 15 percent.

The rivalry between the two men explains both their blitz of television appearances over recent weeks and the way in which they are concentrating their fire on each other.

Bersani's center-left says that regardless of the result it would seek support from the centrists, which is seen as a way of reassuring European partners worried that Italy could lurch to the left and undo Monti's achievements in restoring Italy's credibility after the scandal-plagued Berlusconi's exit a year ago.

Bersani's deputy, Enrico Letta, told reporters on Wednesday that their first dialogue after the vote would be with Monti. "If we win, we will ask Monti's supporters in the center to support the Bersani government," he said.

Bersani vows to stick to Monti's fiscal rigor but to distribute the economic pain more fairly and pursue growth.

Monti, who has rapidly thrown off his technocrat clothes and dived into campaigning since he announced his candidacy after Christmas, accused Berlusconi on Tuesday of pushing Italy towards a "precipice" before he was forced out in 2011.

Rejecting Berlusconi's accusations that he had reduced Italians to misery by raising taxes, especially a hated housing levy, Monti declared: "If I had to raise taxes it is because some irresponsible people had brought the country to that point.

"They asked me to climb on a moving train that was going off the rails," he said in a television interview.

Researchers grow penicillin-producing fungi with new properties

For over 100 years, it was assumed that the penicillin-producing mould fungus Penicillium chrysogenum only reproduced asexually through spores. An international research team led by Prof. Dr. Ulrich Kck and Julia Bhm from the Chair of General and Molecular Botany at the Ruhr-Universitt has now shown for the first time that the fungus also has a sexual cycle, i.e. two "genders". Through sexual reproduction of P. chrysogenum, the researchers generated fungal strains with new biotechnologically relevant properties - such as high penicillin production without the contaminating chrysogenin. The team from Bochum, Gttingen, Nottingham (England), Kundl (Austria) and Sandoz GmbH reports in PNAS. The article will be published in this week's Online Early Edition and was selected as a cover story.

Only penicillin producer

About 100 years ago, Alexander Fleming demonstrated the formation of penicillin in Penicillium chrysogenum. To date, there is no other known producer of the antibiotic penicillin, which has an annual global market value of about six billion Euros.

Combining genes and breeding offspring with new properties

Not only animals and plants, but also many microorganisms such as fungi and algae can reproduce sexually. The advantage: the progenies possess a combination of genes from both mating partners and thus have new properties. Sexual reproduction in fungi is, however, not the rule. Most reproduce via spores which, in the case of moulds, occur as white, green or black deposits on spoiled food. These spores only bear the genes of one parent fungus. "Five years ago we already detected the existence of so-called sex genes in Penicillium chrysogenum", says Prof. Kck. Now, the researchers have discovered specific environmental conditions in which the fungus actually reproduces sexually. The decisive thing was to breed fungal strains in the dark under oxygen deprivation conditions in a nutrient medium supplemented with the vitamin biotin. The offspring exhibited new properties, both at the molecular level, as well as in their phenotypes.

Results could be applicable to other fungi

Using so-called microarray analysis, the biologists also investigated the activity of all the approximately 12,000 genes of the mould fungus. The result: the sex genes control the activity of biologically relevant genes, for example those for penicillin production. "We presume that the findings can also be applied to other fungi", says Ulrich Kck, "such as Penicillium citrinum and Aspergillus terreus that produce cholesterol-lowering statins, or Penicillium brevicompactum and Tolypocladium inflatum, which produce immunosuppressives that are used in all organ transplantations". The researchers conducted the work in the Christian Doppler Laboratory "Biotechnology of Fungi" at the Ruhr-Universitt with funding from the Christian Doppler Society (Vienna).

Siemens Aquaris hearing aid means rain doesn't need to stop play, we go ears on

It's no fun being deaf or hearing impaired. Especially if you are fond of the great outdoors and all the weather-related perils that come with it. Siemens knows this and developed the Aquaris hearing aid, the only one to receive an IP68 rating for continuous submersion under water (to three feet). It's also dust- and shock-proof, if you're further up the extreme activity lifestyle ladder. It's not just about keeping the elements out, it's also got Bluetooth meaning wearers can listen to music on smartphones and other devices while under water.

The device itself is what you might imagine a hearing aid to look like, if it was given the sports treatment, which makes it attractive to younger folk, and those of an active disposition. Most importantly, it works impressively well, which was amply shown by the demonstration we were given with the device permanently submerged in water at the booth, streaming its audio to another device. The waterproof functionality doesn't come at the expense of the sound, either, with the Aquaris sporting High-definition sound with 48 channels with frequency resolution and a 12 kHz frequency range. Given the nature of the device, you'll need to speak with your physician or ENT / otolaryngologist if this sounds like something for you. Available now.
