US finalizes deal to sell F-15s to Saudi Arabia

The sale of $30 billion worth of F-15SA fighter jets to Saudi Arabia has been finalized, boosting the military strength of a key U.S. ally in the Middle East to help counter Iran, the Obama administration announced Thursday.

Under the agreement, the U.S. will send Saudi Arabia 84 new fighter jets and upgrades for 70 more. Production of the aircraft, which will be manufactured by Boeing Co., will support 50,000 jobs and have a $3.5 billion annual economic impact in the U.S., the White House said.

The sale is part of a larger U.S. effort to realign its defense policies in the Persian Gulf to keep Iran in check. The announcement came as U.S. officials weighed a fresh threat from Tehran. Tehran warned this week it could disrupt traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital Persian Gulf oil transport route, if Washington levies new sanctions targeting Iran's crude exports.

The fighter jet sale is part of a larger 10-year, $60 billion arms deal with Saudi Arabia that also includes helicopters, a broad array of missiles, bombs and delivery systems, as well as radar warning systems and night-vision goggles. Congress gave the deal the go-ahead about a year ago.

The plan initially raised concerns from pro-Israeli lawmakers, but U.S. officials reassured Congress that Israel's military edge would not be undercut by the sale. Additionally, there is now broad agreement among Israel, the Gulf Arab states and the West that Iran poses a significant and unpredictable threat.

Saudi Arabia and Iran are bitter regional rivals. Tensions between them were further stoked earlier this year after the U.S. accused Iran of plotting to assassinate the Saudi ambassador to the U.S. in Washington earlier this year.

Saudi Arabia is already the most militarily advanced of the Arab Gulf states, one of the richest countries in the world, and central to American policy in the Middle East. It is also vital to U.S. energy security, with Saudi Arabia ranking as the third-largest source of U.S. oil imports.

The White House announced the agreement with Saudi Arabia from Hawaii, where President Barack Obama is vacationing.

Japanese designer of arty kitchenware Yanagi dies (AP)

TOKYO ? Sori Yanagi, whose designs for stools and kitchen pots brought the simplicity and purity of Japanese decor into the everyday, has died. He was 96.

The pioneer of Japan's industrial design died of pneumonia in a Tokyo hospital Sunday, Koichi Fujita of Yanagi Design Office said Monday.

Yanagi's curvaceous "butterfly stool," evocative of a Japanese shrine gate, won an award at La Triennale di Milano in 1957 and helped elevate him to international stature.

The work later joined the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Louvre museum in Paris.

Another typical Yanagi design was the stackable plastic stool, humorously called the "elephant stool," because of its resemblance to the animal's chunky feet.

The lines and curves of Yanagi designs were as distinctly Japanese as they were universal, winning him fans ? and a place in homes not only in Japan but around the world ? for his tea pots, ceramic cups and even the lowly whisk, which became artwork with his touch.

Yanagi chose design for his career after falling in love with the work of architect Le Corbusier while studying at a Tokyo fine art university.

Credited with paving the way on the international stage for younger Japanese designers, Yanagi also took up more monumental pieces, such as bridges and the Olympic torch, as well as a motorcycle and toys.

He supported Japanese traditional art throughout his life, and he served as head of the Japan Folk Crafts Museum in Tokyo, which his philosopher father founded.

Funeral arrangements were not being disclosed as the ceremony is for family and close friends. He is survived by his wife Fumiko and four children, Fujita said.

China-Based Hacker Teams Threaten US Companies

The US cyber threat from China may be the work of as few as 12 China-based hacker teams. Distinct group digital signatures have enabled US cybersecurity experts to link the teams to various cyber attacks, not just directed at the US government, but to US companies of all sizes. According to a USA Today article, the hacker teams are backed by the Chinese government, and without reciprocal agreements in place, there is little that the US can do to stop them. The cyber attacks from China began as early as 2001 and have increased in intensity over the last three years.

The Chinese government denies sanctioning hacking. Companies don't have an exact dollar loss to quantify the amount of intellectual property stolen, although Bloomberg estimates the loss at $500 million in the last year. China-based hacker teams are seemingly indiscriminate in what they take, preferring to sweep up as much data as possible from as many companies as they can hack.

Traditionally, US companies that have been hacked have been reluctant to reveal the extent of the damage they suffered, but Google was one that did speak out after realizing that their experiences could serve to enlighten other companies and possibly to help push the US government to take action. Certainly, after alarming reports, to get their arms around the scope of the problem the administration invoked national security powers from the Cold War era to compel certain large companies to discuss proprietary information that might be related to cyber attacks. According to an earlier Bloomberg account, this was done in conjunction with concerns that China might be embedding spyware into hardware exported to the US.

Small and midsized companies need to be aware that they too can be targeted by hackers from China. Bloomberg reports that China has gone after technology sectors across all industries, including those in "some of the most obscure corners of the economy." However, Bloomberg also notes that there may be some hacking correlation between China's five-year economic plan and its priority sectors, which include clean energy, advanced semiconductors, iT, aerospace, telecommunications, and biotechnology.

From the IT perspective, the best protection is a good defense. Companies of every size should implement a firewall, a reputable antivirus, and anti-malware. They should keep web browsers and business productivity software updated and patched, and possibly even block network access by country IP address if that is feasible. Transitioning to Internet Protocal version 6 (IPv6) may also be an option and is certainly worth investigating, as are newer data encryption options. Unfortunately, once that line of defense is broached, there is little that IT can do after falling victim to a China-based hacker. US intelligence experts believe that the solution lies in putting a clear US policy of retaliation against the Chinese government in the event of a cyber attack.

Taxation of Financial Products is Plagued by Inconsistency | Big Fat ...

Earlier this month, a joint hearing of the Senate Committee on Finance and the House Committee on Ways and Means focused on the tax treatment of financial products. The goals: to consider how Congress should respond to the potentially inconsistent tax treatment of economically similar financial products, and to determine how well the tax code has responded to the evolving financial products market, according to the Hearing Advisory.

Among those testifying was Thomas Barthold, chief of staff of the Joint Committee on Taxation. Barthold provided some context to the discussion, describing the astronomical growth in some derivative products. For instance, over the past twelve years, the notional amount outstanding of swaps (not including credit derivatives) jumped tenfold, from $14.3 trillion in 1998 to $149 trillion in 2010. Barthold also discussed several issues that arise when determining how to tax financial products. One issue: some instruments have characteristics of both debt and equity, which generally are taxed differently.

Alex Raskolnikov, a professor of law at Columbia, discussed the implications a reduction in the overall corporate tax rate could have on derivatives taxation. ?It is likely that the flaws in the taxation of derivatives will become even more costly if a substantial rate differential between individual and corporate tax rates is introduced.? That?s because taxpayers would have a greater incentive to shift deductions to individuals, assuming they would pay at a higher rate, while also moving income to lower-tax corporations. ?There is every reason to expect that derivatives will be used to accomplish this goal,? he said. On the other hand, if capital gains and ordinary income were taxed the same, taxpayers would have no incentive to use derivatives to convert one type of income to another.

Andrea Kramer, a partner with the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP, and head of its Financial Products, Trading & Derivatives Group, also spoke. She stated that the issue isn?t one of serious loopholes in the taxation of derivatives, at least when it involves taxpayers who use derivatives to manage their risks. Instead, the current definitions of hedging are too limited, Kramer said.

She provided several examples: A company uses derivative transactions to convert the price of its inventory from fixed to floating. Although this is a risk management transaction, it doesn?t currently qualify as a tax hedging transaction. Similarly, an electric utility earning a significant chunk of its annual revenue in the summer months enters into a ?cooling degree day? weather derivative to protect against the risk that summer temperatures will be lower than expected. Again, this currently isn?t treated as a tax hedge. ?The substance of the hedging exemption needs to be expanded,? Kramer said.

Also among those speaking was David Miller, a partner with Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft LLP. Miller described the current federal tax system as having no basis in the reality of economics. That?s because it is based on the ?archaic system of realization ? the concept that income is not earned, and therefore not taxed, until a taxpayer actually sells property for cash or exchanges it for materially different property.? As a result, the tax system is ?numbingly complex,? and taxpayers can choose a tax treatment that minimizes their taxes, he said.

A mark-to-market system would alleviate these concerns, Miller said. Under this system, the taxpayer compares the value of a financial instrument at the end of year against its tax basis and pays a tax on the difference, regardless of whether the instrument is sold. ?It would help level the playing field between middle-class wage earners who pay tax on all of their economic income and the billionaires who pay no tax on their appreciated stock, and it would eliminate the need for the tax ellipses, permitting tremendous simplification.? If incremental change was preferred, a mark-to-market system could be applied selectively to derivatives, Miller said.

China to try another dissident for "subversive" online essays (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) ? China will try a veteran dissident, Chen Xi, on charges of "inciting subversion" for pro-democracy essays he published online, his wife said on Sunday, days after another dissident was jailed for nine years on similar charges.

Chen, a human rights campaigner in Guiyang city in Guizhou, southwest China, was arrested last month and will be tried for "inciting subversion of state power," a charge often used against critics of the ruling Communist Party, said his wife Zhang Qunxuan.

"They accused him because of 36 essays he published at home and overseas," Zhang told Reuters in a telephone interview.

"I don't know exactly what the charges are, because the court and prosecutors wouldn't show me the indictment. They said there are rules against showing that to family members," she said, adding that one of Chen's lawyers told her about the subversion accusations.

Chen, 57, is sure to maintain that he is innocent, but is certain to be found guilty and jailed by China's party-controlled judiciary, Zhang said.

"He's definitely going to fight the charges," she said, citing her discussions with his defense lawyers. She was told of the trial date on Friday, she added.

"But it looks certain that he'll be convicted. That's what courts always decide."

Chen was arrested last month after being released from a week-long detention triggered by his campaigning for independent candidates seeking to win places on China's party-controlled People's Congress assemblies, said Zhang.

Police confiscated his computer, she added.

"Then on November 29, the police called him and said he could come and get his computer," she said. "Instead, they lured him to the public security bureau and arrested him."

Calls to the Guiyang People's Intermediate Court were not answered on Sunday, a rest day in China,. Another human rights activist, Lu Yongxiang, told Reuters he also knew of the trial on Monday through Chen Xi's friends and supporters.

The trial will come after a court in Sichuan province, also in southwest China, convicted rights advocate Chen Wei and sentenced him to nine years in jail after a brief trial on Friday -- the stiffest punishment in a crackdown on dissent this year.

Chen in a common family name in China, and the two men are not related.

Chen Wei's wife, Wang Xiaoyan, and lawyers said he was jailed as punishment for essays that he had published on overseas Chinese websites.

China uses a "firewall" of Internet filters and blocks to prevent citizens from reading websites abroad that are deemed to be politically unacceptable or socially unsound.

Chen Wei's sentence was the third-longest term ever handed down for inciting subversion after Nobel Laureate Liu Xiaobo, who has been serving an 11-year sentence since 2009, and Liu Xianbin, who was jailed for 10 years in March this year.

Earlier this year, Chinese police held hundreds of dissidents, rights activists and protest organizers in a crackdown on dissent this year, when the ruling Communist Party sought to prevent potential protests inspired by anti-authoritarian uprisings across the Arab world.

Many of those detained have been released but remain under police watch. But officials appeared determined to "make an example" of Chen, said Huang Qi, a human rights advocate in Chen's home Sichuan province and a long-time friend of his.

Chen Xi, who faces trial on Monday, is a former soldier and factory worker who was jailed for three years for his support for the 1989 pro-democracy protests across China that ended after troops crushed demonstrations, said his wife.

He was again jailed in 1996, but since his release in 2005 has been an organizer of a citizens' human rights forum in Guiyang.

Haimen, China, Protests: Tear Gas Fired At Protesters

BEIJING -- Riot police in a southern Chinese coastal town fired tear gas Friday at protesters, including elderly men and women, on the fourth day of unrest over a planned power plant expansion, according to protesters' accounts and TV footage.

Police and protesters in the town of Haimen squared off near a highway entrance that has become the focal point for protests this week, with residents demanding that authorities release an unknown number of demonstrators.

The town's elders knelt on the road facing a barricade set up by riot police with helmets and shields several hundred yards (meters) away while others lit large incense sticks and planted them into a plastic foam makeshift altar, a protester said by phone.

"They were begging the police to release those people that they've detained and praying that the riot police can see things more clearly," the 20-year-old saleswoman surnamed Yao told The Associated Press by phone.

Haimen's protesters are demanding a halt to the planned expansion of a coal-fired power plant which they say has contributed to what they say is a rise in cancer cases and heavy pollution in the seas, a serious problem for a town where many make their living from fishing.

The protests started Tuesday when thousands of people besieged a Haimen government office and blocked a highway. When riot police used tear gas in an attempt to disperse them, demonstrators hurled rocks, water bottles and bricks in return. Clashes broke out, injuring an unknown number of protesters and police, residents say.

In response to the protests, the local government said Tuesday that it would temporarily suspend the power plant project, the official Xinhua News Agency said.

But protesters say they have not heard directly from authorities on the matter and say several protesters in their teens or early 20s had been detained.

Many of the protesters waved red plastic bags meant to signify red scarves worn by children as part of their school uniforms, photos from the scene showed.

They held up banners saying "Release the people," "Defend our home" and "Oppose construction of power plant."

It was not immediately clear how many people have been taken into police custody, but Xinhua said Thursday that five people had been detained by Wednesday for vandalism during the protests.

Earlier in the day, police fired tear gas at the protesters, said another protester, a man surnamed Lin.

"When they saw that more and more people had come to protest, they fired the tear gas to try to chase us away. At the same time, a big gust of wind blew toward us, so we all had to run," Lin said. "My tears ran continuously. Our eyes are all red."

This is the third time police have used tear gas to disperse protesters in Haimen this week.

"We have no weapons at all. All we are doing is standing here and protesting," Lin added.

Hong Kong's Cable TV showed footage of tear gas clouds being blown toward protesters, scattering the crowd of hundreds of people. Riot police with helmets and shields had formed a blockade at the entrance to the highway.

After three decades of laxly regulated industrialization, China is seeing a surge in protests over such environmental worries.

In September, hundreds of villagers in an eastern Chinese city near Shanghai demonstrated against pollution they blamed on a solar panel factory. In August, 12,000 residents in the northeastern port city of Dalian protested against a chemical plant after waves from a tropical storm broke a dike guarding the plant and raised fears that flood waters could release toxic chemicals.

Apple investigating fuel cell powered MacBooks

Apple is actively considering using fuel cell technology to power portable devices which could last for 'weeks' from a single charge.

A pair of patents uncovered by AppleInsider, the company asserts that hydrogen-powered fuel cells would see smaller and lighter MacBooks with unheard of battery life.

The patents, Fuel Cell Systems to Power Portable Computing Device and Fuel Cell System Coupled to a Portable Computing Device, were filed in October 2010.

Significantly reduces size weight and cost

Apple's filing says: "This fuel cell system includes a fuel cell stack which converts fuel into electrical power. It also includes a controller which controls operation of the fuel cell system."

"This eliminates the need for a bulky and heavy battery within the fuel cell system, which can significantly reduce the size, weight and cost of the fuel cell system."

The company adds: "Hydrogen fuel cells have a number of advantages. Such fuel cells and associated fuels can potentially achieve high volumetric and gravimetric energy densities, which can potentially enable continued operation of portable electronic devices for days or even weeks without refueling.

"However, it is extremely challenging to design hydrogen fuel cell systems which are sufficiently portable and cost-effective to be used with portable electronic devices."

Eco-friendly

Apple's filing also points out the public's desire for tech companies to explore renewable energy sources and end reliance on fossil fuels.

"As a consequence of increased consumer awareness, electronics manufacturers have become very interested in renewable energy sources for their products, and they have been exploring a number of promising renewable energy sources such as hydrogen fuel which is used in hydrogen fuel cells," said the papers.

NBA Western Conference: Team previews

1:57 p.m. CST, December 24, 2011

(Predicted order of finish)55-27 in 2010-11 4th in West

Lost in West finals

Coming: Reggie Jackson

Going: No one of note

Thunder was spared from mad free-agent scramble, returning every key player from last season. Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook should help young roster come of age, with potential No. 1 seed in West preceding deep playoff run. James Harden is poised to continue development into an upper-echelon guard, and slimmed-down Kendrick Perkins no longer has to slog up the court.

57-25 in 2010-11

3rd in West

NBA champions

Coming: Lamar Odom, Vince Carter, Delonte West, Brandan Wright

Going: Tyson Chandler, Jose Barea, Caron Butler, Corey Brewer, Rudy Fernandez

Chandler and Barea each represent huge losses from defending NBA champions, but Odom should be an inspired addition ? particularly in the four games against Lakers ? and Carter clings to vestiges of greatness. Oh, yeah, and there's still that Nowitzki guy. Biggest question might be how long it takes owner Mark Cuban to zing Khloe Kardashian.

Lakers

57-25 in 2010-11

2nd in West

Lost in second round

Coming: Coach Mike Brown, Josh McRoberts, Troy Murphy, Jason Kapono

Going: Coach Phil Jackson, Lamar Odom, Shannon Brown

If it seems only direction Lakers can go without their longtime coach and top reserves is down, fall shouldn't be long one. Lakers still have core that would make almost every other NBA team envious and coach who has been to Finals. Health of aging superstar Kobe Bryant and fragile big man Andrew Bynum will be assessed on a knee-to-know basis, with any significant setbacks curtailing title aspirations.

Carrollton students scrutinize high school's energy use

CARROLLTON - Students in the high school Physics 2 and Calculus classes completed a two-month study of the school's energy needs and made a presentation to the School Board about their findings.

After looking at alternative energy sources, solar, wind and geothermal, the seniors in Mike Scott's Physics 2 class and Pat Dugas' Calculus class recommended solar power as the best option for the high school.

The two classes started off asking how the school can increase its energy independence. The first graph showed projected energy costs through 2030 growing from about $36,000 to more than $46,000.

The students figured out how many kilowatt-hours would be needed and the size of the solar panels necessary to generate that power when looking at solar power for the school. If 335-watt panels were used, the school would need 403 panels and 9,277 square feet of space to set up the panels. Low maintenance and insurance costs for solar and the long life of the system, 25 to 40 years, made solar the first choice, even though start-up costs are high, the "climate here isn't ideal" and there is a 15-year payback period.

The students also questioned whether the Carrollton High School roof could support the panels. A roof ballast-mounted system would run $771,840, the study showed, but because of the age of the roof, students suggested choosing solar trees to mount the solar panels at a cost of $836,160. Geothermal was the most expensive of the options looked at with a price tag of $1,040,696, and the students noted the fact that the area does not have the right terrain or soil type for the geothermal process. Wind power was deemed too expensive because of start-up and maintenance costs.

"It was an extremely well-done presentation. I was impressed by the depth of their material," said Carrollton School District Superintendent Beth Pressler. "It was very cool. They gave us some common-sense ways to save money. It was a good study, and the students had to think deeply about it. It was exciting."

While the students concluded that solar power was the best option, they conceded it is too expensive at this time.

In other action Monday, the School Board approved the annual tax levy. The estimated levy is $1,783,491. The total tax levy increase is 4.44 percent without debt service. The aggregate amount levied for debt service is 99.9 percent of the 2010 extensions. The aggregate levy increase is 4.99 percent.

Pressler explained changes in the immunization process implemented by the state to protect infants from pertussis disease.

"Beginning with school year 2011-2012, any child entering sixth grade shall show proof of receiving one dose of Tdap (defined as tetanus, diphtheria, acellular pertussis) vaccine, regardless of the interval since the last DTap," Pressler explained. "Students in grades seventh through 12th who have not already received Tdap are required to receive the Tdap dose."

Because of holidays in January and February, the board voted to change the dates of board meetings. The next board meeting will be Jan. 23, and the following month the meeting will be Feb. 27. The School Board normally meets the third Monday of the month.

The board accepted the resignation of teaching assistant Alice McAdams, effective Dec. 5.

Atomic refrigerator could make coldest things possible even colder

The level of control over matter that scientists are now developing to create ultra-cold objects could also be used to create entirely new states of matter and super-powerful quantum computers, researchers added. ?

The coolest things of the future might be created using what are essentially refrigerators that work on the atomic level, researchers say.

The level of control over matter that scientists are now developing to create ultra-cold objects could also be used to create entirely?new states of matter?and super-powerful quantum computers, researchers added.

Scientists routinely cool matter to a few billionths of a degree above absolute zero,?the coldest temperature?theoretically possible, which corresponds to?minus 459.67 degrees?Fahrenheit (minus-273.15 Celsius). Still, they would like to chill matter to even-colder temperatures to better understand other extreme phenomena, such as superconductivity, where electrons zip without resistance through objects.

Now physicists reveal a new way to create ultra-cold matter, with an idea similar to how fridges work. Refrigerators pump a fluid known as a refrigerant around the area they are cooling. This fluid sucks up heat. The refrigerant is then pumped someplace where it dumps this heat.

Chill atoms

First the researchers cooled?atoms of rubidium?with lasers. When set up properly, these beams can force atoms to glow in a way that makes them emit more energy than they absorb, thus making them colder.

When the atoms gave off light as a result of being hit with the laser, this exerted a slight pressure on them. The scientists took advantage of that pressure to control the atoms, either keeping them in place or moving them around, sometimes creating collisions. [Wacky Physics: The Coolest Little Particles]

The researchers then made the atoms even colder with evaporative cooling, in which matter gets cooled in much the same way as a cup of coffee loses its warmth ? the hottest atoms are allowed to evaporate, leaving behind the colder ones.

Finally, the researchers used webs of lasers known as "optical lattices." When two atoms are made to collide within the optical lattice, the excitations of one suppress the excitations of the other, a phenomenon called "orbital excitation blockade." The excited atoms are then removed from the system -- taking away entropy, the amount of energy available for work -- thus causing the remaining atoms to chill down.

In experiments with rubidium atoms in optical lattices, the physicists successfully demonstrated they could remove entropy from atoms via orbital excitation blockade. In principle, they can reach temperatures 10-to-100-times colder than currently achieved, to temperatures of tenths-to-hundredths-of-a-billionth of a degree above absolute zero. However, they likely need lasers of longer wavelengths to do so in real life, said researcher Markus Greiner, a physicist at Harvard University.

Exotic matter

Their research could help "create exotic new states of matter, ones never seen before," Greiner told LiveScience. "Who knows what the properties of these materials might be?"

The ability to create perfect arrays of atoms could also be "a great starting point for a general-purpose quantum computer," Greiner said. Quantum computers exploit the?bizarre nature of quantum physics?? such as how subatomic particles can effectively spin in two opposite directions at the same time ? to run calculations exponentially faster than normal computers for certain problems.

Research into?quantum computers?has mostly been on devices designed to each crunch one specific kind of problem, but optical lattices could lead to general-purpose quantum computers that, like modern personal computers, can tackle many different kinds of problems.

The scientists detailed their findings in the Dec. 22 issue of the journal Nature.

Meet London's new Eco-Routemaster, same as the old Routemaster (video)

The English can't resist a good retro revival: we fell back in love with the new Mini and Doctor Who, so now it's time to do the same with the eco-friendly revamp of the Routemaster bus. Packed with a hybrid engine that doubles the fuel efficiency of a standard diesel (at 11.6mpg -- but it's a bus, so that's a lot) but producing only half the emissions. It'll carry 87 passengers and the vehicle heralds the return of the rear-door, so when it's stuck in traffic, you can safely hop-off and walk the rest of the way. A fleet of eight buses will run London's "38" route from early next year and you can watch the prototype being hand-built in the video we've got for you after the interval.

Real-life impact of a payroll tax increase

By Martha C. White

Sometimes it's the little things that sting the most. For Danny Kofke, a special-needs schoolteacher in the suburbs of Atlanta, the expiration of the payroll tax cut at the end of the year will mean taking his wife to Subway instead of a sit-down restaurant on their twice-monthly date nights. It will mean not buying his two daughters new clothes without careful planning and trimming elsewhere from the family's monthly budget, and skipping fresh blueberries and salmon at the grocery store. "It definitely will impact us," he said.

Economists have been warning for weeks that letting the payroll tax cut expire at the end of the year will deliver a blow to the economy, consumer spending and job creation ? and possibly put the United States' credit rating back in jeopardy. But the pundits have been silent on how American families will be affected by letting the 4.2 percent tax on the first $106,000 in earnings revert back to 6.2 percent.?

According to the Economic Policy Institute, the average household had $920 more this year thanks to the cut, money that's going to evaporate from paychecks starting in January unless Congress passes an extension. President Barack Obama's proposal, also considered unlikely to pass Congress, would halve the 6.2 percent tax and give families an average of $1,500 in 2012.?

Kofke said the tax cut gave his family some breathing room this past year. "It?definitely helps because then we have more to spend on a weekly basis," he said. For 2012, his take-home pay will shrink even further without an extension of the cut, he added, because his health insurance premiums are going up by 15 percent.?And it means there probably won't be a Christmas vacation for the family next year, even though Kofke admits his tastes are modest; this year, the family is renting a cabin for a frugal getaway.

The kicker is that Kofke is no slouch when it comes to budgeting: He's written two books on family spending and money management.?This doesn't shield him from the week-to-week impact of the expiration, though.?"The difference is about $70 a month for us. For us, living on a teacher's salary, that's a decent amount of money."

"So many of us are on the edge with just enough to get by," said?Roberton Williams, a senior fellow at the?Tax Policy Center. "People are worried about making ends meet. ... If you've got a little more money in the bank account at the end of the week, you're more likely to spend that money."

That was the intention of the tax cut, which Williams said funneled an extra $112 billion into the anemic economy this year; rather than giving people a one-time credit or lump-sum payment, boosting their paychecks by a relatively small amount every month would encourage them to spend those dollars rather than sock it away or use it to pay off existing debts.?"In a $14 trillion economy it's less than 1 percent, but at the margins it can make the difference between the local Pizza Hut making it or not making it," he said.?

Williams said taking away that incremental consumer spending next year puts another drag on the economy and the prospects for reducing the 8.6 percent unemployment rate. Conversely, Obama's proposal for a 3.1 percent payroll tax would inject another $180 billion into consumers' hands ? and cash registers ? around the country.?

If that idea were to become law, Kofke said his family would get roughly $1,300 more over the course of the year. "That's $100?a month. That's a week's worth of grocery shopping right there," he said. "That could be a nice summer vacation."?

No verdict after day 2 in Conn. home invasion (AP)

NEW HAVEN, Conn. ? A Connecticut jury Tuesday completed a second day of deliberations without reaching a verdict on whether a man convicted of killing a woman and her two daughters in a brutal home invasion should get the death penalty or life in prison.

The jury deliberated about five hours Tuesday and less than two hours Monday in the sentencing phase of Joshua Komisarjevsky's trial in New Haven Superior Court. They will continue their discussions Wednesday, and Judge Jon Blue suggested they could go later in the day.

Komisarjevsky and Steven Hayes were convicted of killing Jennifer Hawke-Petit and daughters, Hayley and Michaela, at their Cheshire home in 2007. Hayes is on death row.

"It's just a long wait. It's a hard wait," said William Petit Sr., whose granddaughters and daughter-in-law were killed. "By the same token, we know it's very close to being over."

Defense attorneys say Komisarjevsky should not be condemned to death because he was sexually abused as a child and never got proper psychological help. Prosecutors cite the heinous and cruel nature of the crime.

Hayes was convicted of raping and strangling Hawke-Petit. The girls died of smoke inhalation after they were tied to their beds, doused in gasoline and left to die in a fire.

85-year-old says she was strip searched at JFK (AP)

NEW YORK ? An 85-year-old woman said Saturday that she was injured and humiliated when she was strip searched at an airport after she asked to be patted down instead of going through a body scanner, allegations that transportation security officials denied.

Lenore Zimmerman said she was taken to a private room and made to take off her pants and other clothes after she asked to forgo the screening because she worried it would interfere with her defibrillator. She missed her flight and had to take one 2 1/2 hours later, she said.

"I'm hunched over. I'm in a wheelchair. I weigh under 110 pounds (50 kilograms)," she said from her winter home at a seniors community in Coconut Creek, Florida. "Do I look like a terrorist?"

But the Transportation Security Administration said in a statement Saturday that no strip search was conducted.

"While we regret that the passenger feels she had an unpleasant screening experience, TSA does not include strip searches as part of our security protocols and one was not conducted in this case," the statement read.

Zimmerman was dropped off by her son at Kennedy Airport for a 1 p.m. flight Tuesday to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on JetBlue, she said. She arrived at the ticket counter around 12:20 p.m. and headed for security in a wheelchair, her small, metal walker in her lap.

She's been traveling to Florida for at least a decade and has never had a problem being patted down until now, she said. "I worry about my heart, so I don't want to go through those things," she said, referring to the advanced image technology screening machines now in place at the airport.

As a result, she said, she was taken into the private screening room by a female agent and made to strip.

"Private screening was requested by the passenger, it was granted and lasted approximately 11 minutes," the TSA statement read. "TSA screening procedures are conducted in a manner designed to treat all passengers with dignity, respect and courtesy and that occurred in this instance."

The private screening was not recorded.

A review of closed-circuit television at the airport showed that proper procedures before and after the screening were followed, Jonathan Allen, a TSA spokesman, said in a statement.

Zimmerman, who spends half the year in Long Beach, New York, said she banged her shin during the process and it bled "like a pig," partly because she is on blood-thinning medication. She said an emergency medical technician patched her up, but she was told to see a doctor when she arrived in Florida to make sure the wound didn't get infected. There are no records indicating medical attention was called on her behalf.

"I don't know what triggered this. I don't know why they singled me out," she said.

Her son Bruce Zimmerman said he'd like to see someone fired and screeners re-trained after his mother's ordeal.

"My mother is a little old woman. She's not disruptive or uncooperative," he said Saturday. "I don't understand how this happened."

He said she's had an increasingly difficult time traveling, especially since her husband died a few years ago. She has two grandchildren, and her older son, a doctor, died in 2007.

Meanwhile, Lenore Zimmerman said she was healing, planned to go to the grocery store on Saturday and take it easy. She does not plan to head back to an airport until April when she returns to New York.

"Thank goodness," she said. "It will give me some time to brace myself for the return flight."

Study shows frequent gene mutation in kidney cancer | ScienceBlog ...

BGI, the world?s largest genomics organization, announced that a study on frequent mutation of genes encoding ubiquitin-mediated proteolysis pathway (UMPP) components in clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) is published online today in Nature Genetics. In addition to BGI, co-leaders of the study included Peking University Shenzhen Hospital, Shenzhen Second People?s Hospital, among others. The study reveals that alteration of UMPP may contribute to ccRCC by activation of the hypoxia regulatory network, providing new clues to trace the key molecular mechanisms and pathways that underlie the tumorigenesis and progression of ccRCC.

Clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) is the most common and aggressive type of kidney cancer, with 102,000 deaths worldwide each year. It is characterized by high metastatic potential and poor prognosis. Up to 40% of patients have disease recurrence after nephrectomy. In this study, the research team specifically looked at alterations in ubiquitin-mediated proteolysis pathway and studied its potential impacts linked to ccRCC tumorigenesis. The UMPP has been reported to be associated with many diseases including cancer and plays a critical role in the protein metabolism as a major pathway for protein degradation in cells.

?Adding to the previous research effort of transitional cell carcinoma in bladder cancer published in Nature Genetics earlier this year, we and our partners continued our study of strongly aggressive ccRCC tumors to identify the mutated genes associated with the process of tumorigenesis,? said Guangwu Guo, one of the co-leading authors of the study and PI of this project at BGI. ?The new discoveries in this study led us to a remarkable step in our understanding of the genetic landscape of ccRCCs and toward potential treatment against this aggressive tumor.?

To gain a deep insight into the genetic basis of ccRCC, researchers analyzed ten primary tumors with matched morphologically normal renal tissues utilizing the whole exome sequencing approach on BGI?s sequencing platform. The mutation prevalence was estimated by screen of ~1,100 genes with somatic mutations or that have been causally implicated in cancers in 88 additional ccRCCs for prevalence screen.

There were 23 significantly mutated genes identified in the 98 ccRCCs, including the five well-known renal cancer genes such as VHL and TP53, and genes involved in chromatin modification such as PBRM1, JARID1C and SETD2. ?We have identified 12 genes which were previously unknown to be involved in ccRCC, including two tumor suppressor genes, BAP1 and TSC1. Integration of previous studies and our findings suggest that some of the genes may play important roles in ccRCC genesis,? said Guo.

In addition to the attempt to identify all mutated genes associated with ccRCC, researchers also focused on specific genes, pathways and mechanisms that potentially play a key role in ccRCC tumorgenesis and warrant exploration as potential targets for treatments. One of the targets was mutations in VHL gene that were commonly suggested to be involved in ccRCC genesis in many previous genetic studies with reported prevalence ranging between 50% and 80%. Interestingly, researchers have found a much lower prevalence of 27% in this study. VHL promoter hypermethylation was only found in 6% of the tumors relative to their matched normal samples, also suggesting a lower prevalence of epigenetic VHL alternation, according to the researchers.

Although the alteration of VHL gene is widely known for its association with kidney cancer, researchers also revealed the frequent mutation of UMPP linked to ccRCC in this study and have sequenced all 135 genes in UMPP in the prevalence screen. A significantly high mutation frequency of UMPP was found in the 98 carcinoma samples. The pathway analysis suggested that alternation of UMPP could potentially play an important role in ccRCC tumorigenesis, and it may contribute by activating the hypoxia regulatory network.

?This study has enhanced our knowledge and laid an important foundation for future research of ccRCC. The new discovery on the potential contribution of UMPP to ccRCC justifies more comprehensive investigation of this pathway, including proteomics research of the protein network to fully elucidate its role in ccRCC genesis,? said Professor Jun Wang, Executive Director of BGI.

During our Britney Spears Tournament: 30 Videos for 30 Years, we've been asking celebrities to tell us what their personal favorite Britney Spears videos are.

" 'Toxic'!" Gabe Saporta and Victoria Asher of Cobra Starship shouted in unison.

"I don't know if it's that the song was so amazing or what," Gabe said. " 'Womanizer' is amazing!" he added about director Joseph Khan's follow-up video, which features a similar series of Britney alter egos as a theme.

"I'm going to go with the 'Slave' joint," Nick Cannon said with certainty. "That track was crazy. It was probably my favorite Britney record but then the video ... It was all hot and they were sweating. Britney did that!"

"Is it '... Baby One More Time' when she was in the schoolgirl outfit?" "Jersey Shore" star Ronnie asked. "Yeah, that's it."

Head over to Britney30.MTV.com and vote for your favorite music video in MTV News' Britney Spears Tournament: 30 Videos for 30 Years.

When asked what he liked most about it, he laughed and said, "Her in the schoolgirl outfit!"

"The one when she's in the little schoolgirl clothes," agreed Joe Manganiello, who plays the big and burly werewolf Alcide Herveaux in HBO's "True Blood." "That's a good one."

Emily VanCamp from ABC's "Revenge" agreed with Ronnie and Joe. "That was the thing, you know?"

Comedian and talk-show host Jimmy Fallon also went with "... Baby One More Time," saying, "That one's just a classic!"

Unfortunately, "... Baby One More Time" fell out of the competition in the second round of voting to the newer video "Criminal," off of Spears' latest album, Femme Fatale.

Go vote for the finalists now at Britney30.mtv.com and let us know your thoughts on the tournament in the comments section below!
